Convert JPEG to PNG: What Happens to Image Quality?

By Asad · Published September 30, 2026

A PNG export can avoid another round of JPEG compression, but it cannot reverse the compression that already happened. Start by deciding whether you need another image format or a document.

What “without losing quality” means here

The JPEG to PNG converter decodes your JPEG and exports those pixels as PNG at their original dimensions. It does not apply another JPEG compression step. However, compression artifacts, blur and missing detail in the source remain. The browser’s decoding, orientation and color-profile handling can affect the rendered result, and original camera metadata is not guaranteed to survive.

Convert a JPEG to PNG in your browser

  1. Open the converter and choose JPEG images.
  2. Click Convert and wait for the download links. Files are processed locally.
  3. Save an individual PNG or the batch ZIP. Compare an important image against the original before using it for print.

The tool accepts up to 30 files per batch, 40 MB per file and 32 megapixels for a decoded image. These limits help reduce memory failures; a device with limited memory may still struggle with a large batch. Try fewer files if a conversion fails.

Why the PNG may be larger

PNG and JPEG use different compression. A photograph with many colors and textures can take much more space as PNG. If the destination accepts your original JPEG and you need a small file, conversion may not be useful. If it accepts only the shorter .jpg extension, use JPEG to JPG to preserve the exact bytes.

PNG does not remove a background

JPEG does not contain alpha transparency. Its white or colored background stays after conversion. Removing it requires a separate image-editing step. Browser image formats and their capabilities are documented in MDN’s image format guide.

When a PDF is the better result

If you are sending several scanned pages or photographs as one document, go directly to JPG to PDF. Converting every photograph to PNG first can increase storage without helping the final document. If you already have PNG files, Image to PDFJPEG to PNGJPEG to JPGPixels to inches combines them into a PDF.
