Add real password encryption to a PDF in your browser

PDF password protection encrypts the document so a reader must provide the open password before viewing it. EasyPDFEdit uses the QPDF engine compiled to WebAssembly and processes both the file and password locally.

Use a unique passphrase and store it securely. EasyPDFEdit cannot recover a forgotten password because the site never receives or stores it.

How to use Protect PDF

Select an unencrypted PDF

Choose the document you are authorized to protect.

Enter and confirm a password

Use a long, unique passphrase and optionally set a separate owner password.

Encrypt the document

The local QPDF engine applies AES-256 PDF encryption.

Test the protected copy

Open the download in another reader and verify the password before deleting any source file.

Encryption protects access, not document authenticity

A password can limit casual access to a PDF, but it does not prove who created the document. Use digital signatures and an approved records workflow when authenticity or tamper evidence matters.

Share the password through a different channel from the file. Keep an authorized unencrypted original in a protected location when your retention policy requires it.

Example: send a confidential draft with a separate password channel

Encrypt the draft with a unique passphrase, download it and test it in a second reader. Send the PDF through the normal channel and communicate the password through a different trusted channel.

Encryption controls access to the copy; it does not remove metadata or replace organizational security controls. Review the document and retention requirements before distribution.

When Protect PDF is the right choice

  • Require a password before opening a confidential draft
  • Protect a PDF attachment before sharing
  • Create an encrypted storage copy

Edge cases to check before downloading

  • A forgotten password cannot be recovered by EasyPDFEdit.
  • Very old readers may not support AES-256 PDFs.
  • Encryption does not prove authorship or prevent screenshots.

Privacy, quality and compatibility

Password protection cannot recover an already forgotten password and does not replace secure redaction. Anyone with the open password can view the decrypted content.

Your selected files are processed in browser memory. Keep the source document, inspect the download and use the original authoring application when exact legal, print or archival fidelity is required.

Protect PDF FAQ

7 practical answers about files, privacy and output quality.

Which encryption is used?+

The tool requests AES-256 PDF encryption from the bundled QPDF WebAssembly engine.

Is my password uploaded?+

No. The password is passed only to the local browser process and is not stored by EasyPDFEdit.

Can EasyPDFEdit recover my password?+

No. Save the password securely before relying on the protected copy.

Will every PDF reader open the file?+

Current PDF readers support AES-256, but older software may need an update. Test the result in the reader your recipient uses.

What is an owner password?+

It is a separate administrative password used by the PDF encryption system. Use a different value from the open password and store both securely.

Does password protection permanently hide sensitive text?+

No. An authorized reader can view the content after entering the password. Use secure redaction when information must be permanently removed.

Can I protect a file that is already encrypted?+

Unlock it with the current password first, then protect the authorized copy with the new password.
