Convert JPEG to PNG in three steps
- Select JPEG images or drag them into the workspace.
- Choose Convert. The browser decodes each image and creates a PNG at its original pixel dimensions.
- Download individual PNG files or choose the ZIP option for several images.
When PNG is a useful choice
PNG is useful when an application asks for that format or you plan to edit an image without repeatedly applying JPEG compression. This conversion keeps the decoded image dimensions; it cannot restore detail already discarded when the JPEG was created. A photograph saved as PNG can be much larger than its JPEG source.
What happens to transparency and metadata?
A JPEG has no alpha transparency. Converting it to PNG keeps its existing background; it does not cut out the subject. The browser re-encodes the decoded pixels, so camera metadata and embedded profiles are not guaranteed to survive. Color can vary with browser decoding and profiles. Keep the original for archival or color-critical work.
From images to PDF
If your real goal is a document, use JPG to PDF directly. To combine PNG images into a document, use Image to PDFJPEG to PNGJPEG to JPGPixels to inches. Check pixels to inches before choosing a print size. Our JPEG-to-PNG guide explains the quality trade-off.
How this conversion works
The conversion uses the browser’s image decoder and PNG canvas export. See the canvas export documentation for browser behavior.
