Remove PDF encryption with the correct password

Unlock PDF is for documents you own or are authorized to modify. Enter the current open password and the tool creates a new unencrypted PDF that can be opened without entering it again.

The tool is not a password cracker and does not guess forgotten credentials. Incorrect passwords produce an error and the file remains unchanged.

How to use Unlock PDF

Choose the protected PDF

Select the encrypted document you are permitted to unlock.

Enter the current password

Use the password that opens the PDF in a normal reader.

Create an unlocked copy

QPDF decrypts the file inside the browser session.

Verify and store safely

Open the download, review its contents and keep it only in an appropriately protected location.

Use decryption only within an authorized workflow

Removing encryption makes the downloaded copy easier to open, but also removes that access barrier. Consider whether the destination folder, device or sharing method provides suitable protection.

Digital signatures and usage permissions are separate from the open password. Review signature status and applicable policies before distributing a modified copy.

Example: prepare an authorized PDF for an internal workflow

When an approved system cannot process encrypted PDFs, create an unlocked working copy with the known password and place it only in the controlled destination required by that workflow.

Retain the protected original when policy requires it, and delete temporary unencrypted copies once the authorized task is complete.

When Unlock PDF is the right choice

  • Remove a known password for an authorized workflow
  • Create an accessible internal working copy
  • Prepare an owned document for conversion

Edge cases to check before downloading

  • The correct password is required.
  • Removing encryption lowers the file’s access barrier.
  • Rewriting an encrypted signed file can change signature validation.

Privacy, quality and compatibility

You must know a valid password and have authorization. EasyPDFEdit does not bypass or recover unknown passwords.

Your selected files are processed in browser memory. Keep the source document, inspect the download and use the original authoring application when exact legal, print or archival fidelity is required.

Unlock PDF FAQ

7 practical answers about files, privacy and output quality.

Can this guess a forgotten password?+

No. The tool requires the correct current password and does not attempt password recovery.

Does the password leave my browser?+

No. It is used only by the local QPDF WebAssembly process.

Why does the unlocked file need secure storage?+

Removing the open password means anyone with access to the copied file can read it.

Can unlocking affect a digital signature?+

Decryption and rewriting can change signature validation. Keep and verify the signed original separately.

Does unlocking delete the original protected PDF?+

No. The original selected file is never overwritten; the browser downloads a new unencrypted copy.

Can I unlock a PDF with an owner password?+

QPDF accepts a valid password recognized by the file. The exact behavior depends on how the source PDF was encrypted.

Is unlocking the same as removing a digital signature?+

No. Encryption, permissions and digital signatures are separate PDF features and should be reviewed independently.
